The XIV Lithuanian Folk Dance Festival was produced and danced in Boston, Mass. on July 1, 2012.
Key organizers: Vytas Maciūnas, President of the USA Lithuanian American Community, Marius Žiaugra, President of the Festival Committee of Boston, and Danguole Varnas, President of LTŠI/LFDI Inc., had solidified early preparations for this magnificent event when in August, 2010, V. Brazaitis and R. Jonušonis were confirmed as the Artistic Directors.
Evolution in further planning graced committee after committee with volunteer representation mainly from Boston, Chicago, and Toronto. To welcome and prepare for dancers and friends coming to the Festival from not only the USA and Canada, but also from Brazil, England, Sweden, and most welcomed from Lithuania itself, was the job of the Boston Organizing Committee working hand in hand with the Artistic Directors.
VIP guests and dignitaries welcomed an audience of 5000 enthusiasts and nearly 2000 dancers to the Festival.
However, the true sentimental limelight belonged to a most special guest of the Festival ceremonies ~ the Golden Lady of "Išeivija" Lithuanian Folk Dance ~ Mrs. Genovaite Breichmanienė of Hamilton, Ontario, CAN., the oldest survivor and most worthy of the honor to represent "Išeivija" history and its longevity.
On June 29, 2012, a night before the XIV Festival, at a reception hosted LTŠI and the Boston Organizing Committee honoring dance teachers and directors of 50 groups, G. Breichmanienė was honored for her life time achievements. This distinguished woman stands unique in our pages of history as a writer and historian of Lithuanian folk dance history, the founder of Hamilton, Ontario's renowned group "Gyvataras" and its director for 40 years, Artistic Director of the IV Festival (1968) and the VIII Festival (1988).
Of great sentiment as well, members of Vilnius University Dance and Song Ensemble ( VDU) , one of the guest participating groups from Lithuania at this festival, also found an opportunity to also applaud and recognize G. Breichmaniene as the founder of their group from a time gone by - 1940, war-torn Lithuania.
Look for the forthcoming LTŠI/LFDI Newsletter/ŽINIARAŠTIS in October, 2012 for more information on this Festival.
